As a gifted singer and a versatile pianist with no formal training, Sara Bareilles burst onto the pop scene with a naturally skilled voice ranging from powerful and soulful to sweet and gentle, earning her instant comparisons to Fiona Apple and Norah Jones. At age 18, she left the Redwood forests of her hometown, Eureka, CA, in pursuit of the big city lights of Los Angeles. Although she attended UCLA's Communication Studies program, Bareilles spent the majority of her spare time studying her new environment and writing poetry and songs about the busy surroundings. After graduating, she spent the next three years performing those songs at open-mike nights, slowly building her confidence as a musician before playing local venues and festivals. In 2003, she co-produced her first demo, Careful Confessions, and became enthralled with recording techniques. Eager to go back to the studio and create a second full-length album, she started shopping her CD around and signed a deal with Epic Records in April 2005. Producer Eric Rosse took her under his wing the following February and the two spent a little over a year perfecting the orchestration -- nearly half of the songs had formerly appeared on Careful Confessions and a new batch of tracks was carefully constructed in order to make her first major-label release as strong as possible. The lyrical themes of the album, entitled Little Voice and released in July 2007, covered her past relationships, insecurities, and inner battles with trying to trust her instincts.

My favorite songs on her album "Little Voice," would be "Love Song," "Bottle it Up," and "Vegas." Check her out!

BiOgrApHy: ”Poised, beautiful, armed with unforgettable songs and a voice to match, Kate Voegele is poised on the brink of something big indeed, Don’t Look Away, Voegele’s first full-length album (MySpace Records), is a revelation, as the 20-year-old writer/singer, belying her tender years, delivers songs of depth and insight with a powerfully seductive voice that maintains a fierce presence amid dynamic rock grooves and infectious pop hooks. Produced by the veteran Marshall Altman (Matt Nathanson, Mark Broussard), Don’t Look Away is a bravura effort from an old soul with a youthful spirit; think of her album as a female parallel to John Mayer’s Room for Squares—at once a zeitgeist-capturing landmark and the launchpad for a viable career. The tracks range from the rootsy acoustic ballad “Wish You Were,” with its mandolin and accordion filigree, and the sparse, piano-based “Kindly Unspoken” to the widescreen heartbreak anthem “Only Fooling Myself” and the ironically titled “It’s Only Life,” a soaring expression of female empowerment, which Voegele describes as “a motivational, uplifting song about dealing with situations rather than trying to hide from them.” “One Way or Another” is an edgy rocker about romantic victimization, while the punchy “Chicago,” she says, “is a metaphorical representation of any kind of escape, about just needing to get away. The line at the end of the chorus is, ‘I’ll be on the seven o’clock to Chicago,’ so it refers to a specific city, but it’s universally applicable.” (courtesy of katevoegle.com)

My favorite songs off her "Don't Look Away" album are "Kindly Unspoken," "Only Fooling Myself," and "Might Have Been."

Los Angeles-based vocalist Hope song-cries with a humble, quiet-fire lucidity-- as autumnal as apple juice but as clear as the rain. Her voice, breathy and bittersweet, occasionally cracks Crow-esque, but is ultimately distinguished by an earthier, spiritual sheen that comes feathered in two shades of pain and survivor-guilt soulfulness. Any skepticism concerning Hope’s sonic sorcery is purged once you lean into her sound’s religion and let the lullabies wash over you like a promise. Her Debut CD -- Hope -- is soul-baring storytelling set to music at its best. Each song is a delicately crafted blend of lyrical imagery, sultry rhythms, pure vocals, and universal truths. As one of her adoring fans says: Hope is the searing voice of the collective imagination. Her subtle strength is her ability to capture the human experience and translate it into song.

With a number 1 single in America, a number 1 UK debut album, and over 6.5 million units shifted worldwide, Natasha Bedingfield is the UK..s biggest female pop star bar none - a bold, beautiful home grown answer to US Uber-Divas Christina Aguilera and Pink.

Natasha took the US by storm last year with the first British chart topping hit by a female in almost twenty years.

Her album entitled, "Pocketful of Sunshine," has a happy vibe. My favorite song on her second album would be, "Say It Again." It is currently playing in my car... :)

the virgins

The Virgins exemplify the sound and style of downtown New York City in 2008. The band came together in 2006, the brainchild of songwriter/performer Donald Cumming. Having lived on NYC’s streets since the age of 16, Cumming’s teen years were chronicled by artist/photographer Ryan McGinley in his now-legendary debut solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
With Cumming joined by bassist Nick Zarin-Ackerman, guitarist Wade Oates, and drummer Erik Ratensperger, The Virgins began playing at downtown parties at such spots as St. Marks Church and 205. For their third show ever, the Virgins took Paris by storm, performing at designer Agnès B’s fashion week party alongside Patti Smith and Sonic Youth. The band’s connection to New York’s art scene is no more apparent than in their own album art, which features design and photography from Dan Colen and Terry Richardson.
The Virgins have spent much of the last two years on the road, headlining and sharing stages with such bands as Cold War Kids, Tokyo Police Club, Jet, Tapes N’ Tapes, the Long Blondes, White Rabbits, and Ra Ra Riot. The band recently caused commotion in Europe, where they were featured on the cover of France’s Jalouse Magazine. The Virgins also hit London for a number of packed-out shows – including an acclaimed set opening for their good friend Mark Ronson at the Hammersmith Apollo, which saw NME honoring them as the “Best Band We’ve Seen This Week.”

The Virgins will be in Los Angeles, June 21, 2008 at the Wiltern Theatre.

Hailing mainly from Eugene, Oregon, Justin King and his band released their debut EP Fall/Rise earlier this year and are gearing up to release their debut full-length album sometime this summer. The EP, recorded independently and engineered, produced, and mixed entirely by Justin, was recorded while the band was extricating itself from a disintegrating record deal with Epic. The soon-to-be released full length album features the tracks that were recorded for Epic. Check for it sometime this summer!!!
