As a gifted singer and a versatile pianist with no formal training, Sara Bareilles burst onto the pop scene with a naturally skilled voice ranging from powerful and soulful to sweet and gentle, earning her instant comparisons to Fiona Apple and Norah Jones. At age 18, she left the Redwood forests of her hometown, Eureka, CA, in pursuit of the big city lights of Los Angeles. Although she attended UCLA's Communication Studies program, Bareilles spent the majority of her spare time studying her new environment and writing poetry and songs about the busy surroundings. After graduating, she spent the next three years performing those songs at open-mike nights, slowly building her confidence as a musician before playing local venues and festivals. In 2003, she co-produced her first demo, Careful Confessions, and became enthralled with recording techniques. Eager to go back to the studio and create a second full-length album, she started shopping her CD around and signed a deal with Epic Records in April 2005. Producer Eric Rosse took her under his wing the following February and the two spent a little over a year perfecting the orchestration -- nearly half of the songs had formerly appeared on Careful Confessions and a new batch of tracks was carefully constructed in order to make her first major-label release as strong as possible. The lyrical themes of the album, entitled Little Voice and released in July 2007, covered her past relationships, insecurities, and inner battles with trying to trust her instincts.

My favorite songs on her album "Little Voice," would be "Love Song," "Bottle it Up," and "Vegas." Check her out!

BiOgrApHy: ”Poised, beautiful, armed with unforgettable songs and a voice to match, Kate Voegele is poised on the brink of something big indeed, Don’t Look Away, Voegele’s first full-length album (MySpace Records), is a revelation, as the 20-year-old writer/singer, belying her tender years, delivers songs of depth and insight with a powerfully seductive voice that maintains a fierce presence amid dynamic rock grooves and infectious pop hooks. Produced by the veteran Marshall Altman (Matt Nathanson, Mark Broussard), Don’t Look Away is a bravura effort from an old soul with a youthful spirit; think of her album as a female parallel to John Mayer’s Room for Squares—at once a zeitgeist-capturing landmark and the launchpad for a viable career. The tracks range from the rootsy acoustic ballad “Wish You Were,” with its mandolin and accordion filigree, and the sparse, piano-based “Kindly Unspoken” to the widescreen heartbreak anthem “Only Fooling Myself” and the ironically titled “It’s Only Life,” a soaring expression of female empowerment, which Voegele describes as “a motivational, uplifting song about dealing with situations rather than trying to hide from them.” “One Way or Another” is an edgy rocker about romantic victimization, while the punchy “Chicago,” she says, “is a metaphorical representation of any kind of escape, about just needing to get away. The line at the end of the chorus is, ‘I’ll be on the seven o’clock to Chicago,’ so it refers to a specific city, but it’s universally applicable.” (courtesy of katevoegle.com)

My favorite songs off her "Don't Look Away" album are "Kindly Unspoken," "Only Fooling Myself," and "Might Have Been."

Kate Voegele will be on tour this summer. You can check here out near and in Los Angeles on the following dates:

Los Angeles-based vocalist Hope song-cries with a humble, quiet-fire lucidity-- as autumnal as apple juice but as clear as the rain. Her voice, breathy and bittersweet, occasionally cracks Crow-esque, but is ultimately distinguished by an earthier, spiritual sheen that comes feathered in two shades of pain and survivor-guilt soulfulness. Any skepticism concerning Hope’s sonic sorcery is purged once you lean into her sound’s religion and let the lullabies wash over you like a promise. Her Debut CD -- Hope -- is soul-baring storytelling set to music at its best. Each song is a delicately crafted blend of lyrical imagery, sultry rhythms, pure vocals, and universal truths. As one of her adoring fans says: Hope is the searing voice of the collective imagination. Her subtle strength is her ability to capture the human experience and translate it into song.

With a number 1 single in America, a number 1 UK debut album, and over 6.5 million units shifted worldwide, Natasha Bedingfield is the UK..s biggest female pop star bar none - a bold, beautiful home grown answer to US Uber-Divas Christina Aguilera and Pink.

Natasha took the US by storm last year with the first British chart topping hit by a female in almost twenty years.

Her album entitled, "Pocketful of Sunshine," has a happy vibe. My favorite song on her second album would be, "Say It Again." It is currently playing in my car... :)

the virgins

ArTiSt: tHe viRgiNS

GeNrE: NeW WaVe/ R&B/ sOuL

The Virgins exemplify the sound and style of downtown New York City in 2008. The band came together in 2006, the brainchild of songwriter/performer Donald Cumming. Having lived on NYC’s streets since the age of 16, Cumming’s teen years were chronicled by artist/photographer Ryan McGinley in his now-legendary debut solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
With Cumming joined by bassist Nick Zarin-Ackerman, guitarist Wade Oates, and drummer Erik Ratensperger, The Virgins began playing at downtown parties at such spots as St. Marks Church and 205. For their third show ever, the Virgins took Paris by storm, performing at designer Agnès B’s fashion week party alongside Patti Smith and Sonic Youth. The band’s connection to New York’s art scene is no more apparent than in their own album art, which features design and photography from Dan Colen and Terry Richardson.
The Virgins have spent much of the last two years on the road, headlining and sharing stages with such bands as Cold War Kids, Tokyo Police Club, Jet, Tapes N’ Tapes, the Long Blondes, White Rabbits, and Ra Ra Riot. The band recently caused commotion in Europe, where they were featured on the cover of France’s Jalouse Magazine. The Virgins also hit London for a number of packed-out shows – including an acclaimed set opening for their good friend Mark Ronson at the Hammersmith Apollo, which saw NME honoring them as the “Best Band We’ve Seen This Week.”

The Virgins will be in Los Angeles, June 21, 2008 at the Wiltern Theatre.

Hailing mainly from Eugene, Oregon, Justin King and his band released their debut EP Fall/Rise earlier this year and are gearing up to release their debut full-length album sometime this summer. The EP, recorded independently and engineered, produced, and mixed entirely by Justin, was recorded while the band was extricating itself from a disintegrating record deal with Epic. The soon-to-be released full length album features the tracks that were recorded for Epic. Check for it sometime this summer!!!

The dance-rock outfit Young Love is headed by Dan Keyes, who served as frontman for the post-grunge band Recover from 2001 to 2004. After releasing three albums with that Austin-based band, Keyes relocated from Texas to New York City in search of a change of pace. Within the span of a year, he had amassed a number of slick, stylish songs. "Discotech," an advance single from the band's debut album, was released that October 2007, and the full-length Too Young to Fight It followed in January 2007.

Though she was born in Seattle, Alison Sudol spent most of her life in Los Angeles, moving there with her mother when she was five. Despite the fact she was always interested in music, it wasn't until she was in her late teens, inspired by bands like Coldplay and Keane, that she began playing an instrument, the piano being her weapon of choice. After she had composed a few pieces, she sent out a short demo, receiving immediate response from Capitol Record's Jason Flom, who came to Sudol's house to hear her play and soon signed the young singer/songwriter. After a SXSW appearance in March 2007 (opening for the Stooges, strangely enough), Sudol, who chose to go by the name A Fine Frenzy as an artist (taken from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream), she released her full-length debut, One Cell in the Sea, in July 2007.

This Is Somewhere (Ragged Company/ Hollywood Records) marks the coming of age of the young, Vermont-based rock band Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. To say that this album makes good on the band’s immense promise would be an understatement. While these assertions quite naturally invite skepticism, I respond: “just insert and press 'play'.”

The album manifests incredible growth in the writing and singing of 24-year-old phenomenon Grace Potter, who has clearly found her true voice in both respects, as well as the instrumental prowess of the band: Potter on the Hammond B3, guitarist Scott Tournet, bassist Bryan Dondero and drummer Matt Burr. On this remarkable record, they make a glorious racket indeed.

The band’s timeless, organic brand of American rock & roll is fully in evidence throughout their album "This Is Somewhere."

Grace Potter and the Nocturals will be performing @ the Greek Theatre May 11 2008 @ 5:30PM in Los Angeles.

Taylor Swift has been singing all her life, motivated by her grandmother, who was a professional opera singer. She began performing locally around her town and county at the age of ten, and at age 11 sang the national anthem before a Philadelphia 76ers game. By the time she was 12, she had picked up the guitar and began practicing four hours each day, until her fingers started to bleed. Swift's parents began to support her music, and recognized her talent, perseverance, and budding future as a professional musician. The family began making regular visits to Nashville, TN, where Swift would perform casually and meet with songwriters in the area. The family decided to move to an outlying Nashville suburb, which accelerated Swift's career. While performing at a showcase at Nashville's Bluebird Café, Swift caught the eye of music industry veteran Scott Borchetta. He had plans to create a new label and decided Swift was one of the first acts he wanted to sign. Still a high school student fascinated by love (which she uses as her muse), she released her debut single, "Tim McGraw," in August 2006, followed by a self-titled album that October 2006.

Sia's Biography:

Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, to use the name her musician parents gave her, already has a staggering track record. If her name itself-pronounced 'See-ah' isn't familiar to millions, her voice undoubtedly is.

In 2000, the Adelaide born singer scored a bolt from the blue Top 10 hit with her debut single, Taken For Granted. Pairing her unique Australian drawl with the strident strings from Prokofiev's 'Romeo & Juliet', the track was championed by Trevor Nelson and had Sia performing live on Jo Whiley's Radio 1 show. Her debut album, 'Healing Is Difficult', arrived to similar cries of ´the next big R&B thing'. Then, to cap it all, she added her jazzy slurs to two tracks on Zero 7's Simple Things album and became the unmistakable voice of the year's coolest down-tempo soundtrack. All the pieces for a phenomenal career seemed to be in place.

And then nothing.

"I went a bit mental after that," she explains, before letting out a laugh that would stop traffic. "No seriously, I needed therapy and everything." She recovers her composure only long enough to explain that going from hero to zero left her confused and frustrated and that it was a really enjoyable time, those moments of feeling like a 'Coolio'! But sadly they've passed now.

Brandishing both wicked humour and brutal honesty, it's sometimes hard to know exactly when Sia's joking. What is certain is that, with fragile beauty, a collaboration with Beck, and swathes of sensual soul-searching, 'Healing Is Difficult's long overdue follow-up, ‘Colour The Small One, rekindles thoughts of an all conquering phenomenon and will surely make her a 'coolio' once again.

Crazy or not, Sia has talent! Her newest album titled, "Some People Have Real Problems,"
is currently 64 on the Billboard charts.

Biography: When a teenage Jason Reeves encountered the works of Bob Dylan and James Taylor it set off a chain of events. First he began working on his own songwriting, combining the classic singer/songwriter style with more modern influences like Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens. He then dropped out of college and moved from his native Iowa, eventually landing in California. The second person he met upon arrival was future pop star Colbie Caillat. The two hit it off immediately and it didn't take long for their friendship to turn into a songwriting partnership, one that would create the foundation for Caillat's hit album Coco. The songs that weren't reserved for Coco ended up on Reeves' EP Hearts Are Magnets which appeared in 2006 on the Dancing Squirrel label. The full-length The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache followed in 2007.
